The comfortable world of Martris Drayke, second son of King Bricen of Margolan, is shattered when his older half-brother, Jared, and Jareds dark mage, Foor Arontala, kill the king and seize the throne. Tris is the only surviving member of the royal family aside from Jared the traitor, and he flees with three friends Soterius, captain of the guard; Carroway, the courts master bard; and Harrtuck, a member of the royal guard.

Tris harbors a deep secret. In a land where spirits walk openly and influence the affairs of the living, he suspects he may be the mage heir to the power of his grandmother, Bava Kaa, once the greatest sorceress of her age. Such magic would make Tris a Summoner, the rarest of magic gifts, capable of arbitrating between the living and the dead.

The Summoner Chronicles of the Necromancer Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Gail Z Martin Peter Ganim Audible Studios Books

The heroes and main plot are without surprises, but the reading would be rather pleasant if the pace was less slow... Many lengthes for predictable twists.
When I read the book it was some monthes after its purchase, I didn't realise it wasn't a one-shot so when I finished it I was disappointed : I would like to read the final confrontation between the heroes of the light against the evil sorcerer and his puppet, but no, I didn't want another full book to know who would survive (I' was pretty sure the prince and princess would and have many heirs for their kingdoms !), but I found most of the characters likeable enough to go read the rewiews of the other volumes to know about their fate.
A reading for leisure, easy even if English isn't your first langage.
Not a unforgettable book

The Summoner Chronicles of the Necromancer Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Gail Z Martin Peter Ganim Audible Studios Books Reviews

I like the idea of this book...main character has to flee home, his brother wants to kill him. Check. I like a good reluctant hero, especially a good one, entwined with magic talents..
But it wasn't enough to carry me through the entire book. The main character was mildly interesting...his magic talents were a little silly (i.e. didn't make much sense), and the story wasn't packed with a solid foundation.
You can have the greatest characters, but a story that's lacking...or a great story with lacking characters.. This book was equally flawed in both areas..
Robert Jordan is much better...or even Lorna Freeman...or Greg Keyes (Briar King).
I zipped right through the 637 pages of "The Summoner," and while there were some problems with it, I still liked it a lot. It's epic fantasy and it's epic fantasy with all the tropes and standard characters one sees in epic fantasy. If that bugs you, that the book is a bit derivative, then get thee hence and grab another book! But I like epic fantasy when it is well done, and I thought this effort was a good one.

I'm not going to discuss plot; that's covered elsewhere well enough. But I will say that the things that bothered me most in the book were elements of the writing that were amaturish. "As you know, Bob" dialog. Backstory and info dumps of inappropriate length. Flabby prose. Things that should have been fixed in a good edit.

But it was a decent read. I liked it. I'll pick up the 2nd book and read it.
This is the first book in the series and I can’t wait to read the rest. The characters came to life for me and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.
Think of it like a well-paced, shallowly written adventure.
Good enough for me to read through and keep going, but the characters are not very deep, the plot isn't very deep, nothing is very deep. But the pacing is very good, and I somehow cared enough to keep reading; ymmv.

Oh, and I hope you like gasping. A whole lot. Because everyone (especially the female characters) gasps at every little thing.
I have to say, while this is a good book it is definitely a little cliche. Familiar characters, a familiar setting, and a familiar plot doesn't make this book terribly original.

With all that being said this book was pretty good. I can't quite pinpoint what made it so, since it is a pretty standard tale in the fantasy department. I think it has to do with all the combined elements. It's a good story, the characters are endearing, and I guess it has a unique spin with the Necromancer being the main character.

I usually pick up a book if I am attracted to it's cover. Then, it's title, and if those qualities are met I'll open it up and give it a test read. The book started off interesting and Gail does a good job of keeping the pace and keeping you interested in what's going to happen next.

Overall this was an enjoyable book. If you're inbetween reads or want a good solid faithful story, you'll like this.
There were some really enjoyable highlights to this book that kept me going. I couldn't give it a higher rating because the story was too familiar, and there was no mystery- i could have guessed what happened next. The characters are memorable, but the hero is a bit too unreal. The best characters are the supporting cast, they have most interesting backstories and are the most believable. I may read the next volume if i have nothing else to do.
I am a serious fantasy fan and an avid reader and this book is NOT worth the time I took to read it. The plot sounds like a good idea, the main character's power is the ability to see spirits and he is the second in line to the throne. On the night of a festival similar to Halloween his older brother kills their father and seizes the throne, Martris must flee with a group of loyal friends if he is to live to kill his brother and take back the throne.

This premise is promising and I bought the book in spite of the negative reviews, it was a bad decision. The story drags on, goes nowhere quickly (way to long for what the book covers), and the character development is painful to read through. What started as a great idea dies under the writing of this author. I have never read anything else by this writer and I don't know if it is just this book that is poorly written and developed, or if everything they write is like this book, but I won't be buying anything else from this author.

If I could rate this book as no stars I would.
The heroes and main plot are without surprises, but the reading would be rather pleasant if the pace was less slow... Many lengthes for predictable twists.
