For unwed mother Nell Lillington, 1876 Chicago—and her new wealth—offer the promise of longed-for independence. She dreams of a place in society for her daughter Sarah and contentment for her friend Tess. Yet how can she settle in a town where she’s far too likely to run into Martin Rutherford and his glittering, faithless wife, Lucetta? Can she resist her love for Martin for Sarah’s sake?
Martin was doubtless joking when he told Nell that if she got herself mixed up with a murderer for the third time, he’d disown her. But when Martin himself is arrested for murder, Nell’s dreams appear to be swallowed up in the new web of secrets she constructs to help him. Secrets that threaten to alienate Tess, Sarah, and even Martin . . .
The third book in the House of Closed Doors series will take you to a Chicago teeming with opportunistic new Americans, luxury-loving merchant princes and hard-hearted denizens of the underworld.

The Shadow Palace, by Jane Steen, is the third book of The House of Closed Doors series, and in it we get a beautiful resolution to Nell and her family’s story. As always, Jane Steen delivers a great book, with colorful and interesting characters that seamlessly grew and came alive throughout the series.Nell has learned a lot during her last years and hard experiences, and we can see she matured. Some of her main traits – like her stubbornness – continue, of course, and that lead us to a more mysterious plot than the others before, in my opinion. She got herself in situations we wouldn’t expect, but it worked really well with the main plot. That is to say, this book had more twists and turns I didn’t see coming, and it only made the mystery more interesting. It also made sense for a character that looked for her autonomy since her early teens to act more, to do more, and really show her independency. Nell is a great female character, I feel I can relate to her, and she didn’t disappoint me, struggling, looking for her dreams and keeping her principles. We get to see a little more of Martin in this book, and the very human way he deals with the death of an unwanted wife. Again, Jane Steen portraits relatable and truthful characters, and the way the problems and other relationships affect them are very real. (Same with Tess and how she deals with her family).
The book is beautifully detailed in terms of a historical description, and we get to feel the beginning of the great department stores and the reconstruction of Chicago, and this is curious in its own right. I marveled with how easy Jane Steen brings us to different places in this period, which only shows how good a storyteller she is. I was pleasantly surprised with her first book, because I expected something different from the description, but now, knowing her work, I am a complete fan.

The Shadow Palace The House of Closed Doors Book 3 edition by Jane Steen Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I'm sure glad this was the last book, lol I would gave spent a fortune continuing to buy each one!! I throughly enjoyed the writing skills if the author, the twists and turn,,excellent plots, I couldn't put them down!! Thank you for this excellent story.,
Excellent continuing story, 3 books, following the life of a young woman raised in the protected role of women in the Victorian era. Read that as when women were property and not individuals with rights. Through the series, the tale watches the various roles of women, their evolution, and increasing rights and roles in society. Mix in some intrigue, romance, murder and mystery, in a fast moving, easy to read, yet complex series of of books about the main character's life and her growth as a woman. Already reading the first book in the next series!
I have waited until I had finished all three books. It's rather hard to
Think the first two as stand alone novels,as they leave you hanging. Completing the third does fully satisfy and complete the story.. The story was very enjoyable, believable and never boring.
Jane brought the people and places to life for me. Jane captured all the suspense perfectly and I found myself drawn it time after
Time.. I thank her for writing so well.I recommend this "House Of Closed Doors" ,I've found a new to me author to read.
Nell, Tess and Sarah move to Chicago to start their new life. Getting things in order and finding a job. Even though they were financially ok. Nell believed that women should be able to work and manage their own money. And not every woman wanted to marry. Read this book and enjoy her thoughts and see how her life changes.
I loved this entire series - honestly more than expected. The characters were very real, and the plot and plot twists were entertaining and made sense. I especially loved how the characters were mature. No melodrama here. Just a great story! Also, had a very period feel to the writing style. Highly recommend this book and the series!
This series makes you want to keep turning the pages into the night. Nell loved Martian so much that when his wife was found murdered she went under cover to see if she could help find the one who killed her. She could not show Martian any attention because they would say he had a reason for wanting her dead. Very good read wanting more.
This is the last book in the series (The House of Closed Doors ) that I have read and while you could read it as a stand alone I suggest that you read all three to get a sense of the characters and the times in which they lived. The series center around Nell and Martin who grew up together and about the choices or lack of the were opened to men and women during this time period.
It contains romance, mystery and insight into post Civil War life during turbulent economic times!
Read it and you won't be disappointed!
